The beta
No beach shows figures on the web yet.

The beta starts with a few beaches in Anglet. A beach shows its crowd here once its counts have been checked by hand. Until then we show no number, rather than a guess.

How we count

The numbers behind the surf cam

Live · Usual

Per peak, not per beach.

Live, the people in the water, peak by peak when the camera can see the lineup. Rides come once tested. Usually, the crowd for this day and time.

Apple Watch

Your session, on the plan.

Surf with Apple Watch and see your time in the water, distance and top speed on a detailed plan of the beach, next to the lineup's numbers.

Certainty

Honest about what it knows.

Ranges and a certainty face on every figure. When we don't know, we say so.

How sure we are

Four faces, always with their word. We never show a percentage we can't back up, and when there's not enough data we show no number at all.

Watch, your stats.

Start a session on Apple Watch. Afterwards, see your time in the water, the distance you paddled and rode, and your top speed on the beach plan, and how your session compares with the lineup that day.

We count people,
not who they are.

ob.surf turns camera views into numbers. We show no faces and no identities: people appear only as anonymous dots or counts. We'll keep footage only where its owner allows it, and only to improve the counts. To watch, we link to the owner's own page. Every figure says roughly where it comes from.

How we count a lineup

Help us count the coast

Surfers, camera owners, drone pilots, surf schools and towns can all help: a quick report from the beach, footage you own, or a camera view we may use.

Ways to help

Run a beach, a school or a camera?

We make occupancy reports for towns and tourism offices, planning tools for surf schools, and counts for camera owners' own pages.

Questions

Which beaches are covered?None on the web yet. The beta starts with a few beaches on the Basque coast, in Anglet, and the map will show which ones are live.
Where do the numbers come from? From our own algorithms, built on data from multiple sources.
Do you show camera video?Only where the camera's owner has cleared it. Otherwise we link to the owner's own page.
What do you show about people?Counts and anonymous dots. No faces, no names, and no way to look anyone up.
Do I need an Apple Watch? Not to check a beach. You need one to record your own sessions.
What about Android and Garmin? They're on our roadmap, under Later.
How accurate are the numbers? Each figure carries a certainty face, earned from how well our counts have matched at that beach. If one looks wrong, tap the face and tell us.
What happens to my data?Your sessions are yours. Export or delete them any time from the app. This website keeps nothing about you: see Privacy.
What is Demo?A switch at the top of every page. It fills the pages with example figures, each marked "Illustration, not data", so you can see what a beach will look like. Nothing in it is real.
